Whatever your taste, there’s no denying that 2013 has been a pretty big year for music. But the only thing we could possibly love more than hearing new material from our favourite artists are the music videos that quickly follow behind. With the year quickly coming to a close, it only seems fitting to pull together a list of some of the best music videos this year had to offer.
Admittedly, it was hard to narrow the list down but we’ve tried our best to include videos from the record breakers, comeback kings and those who simply flew under the radar.
Without further ado, here are the 10 best music videos of 2013:
1. “Mirrors” by Justin Timberlake
It took Justin Timberlake seven years to return the music scene and he did so with a bang. The former boy bander released two albums this year as part of The 20/20 Experiencebut it was the music video for his second single, “Mirrors,” that had us weeping. In tribute to his grandparents (his grandfather, William, passed away last December), Justin touched our hearts with their longstanding love story. 2. “Girls” by The 1975
2013 was British rockers The 1975′s year and it’s no wonder why. With their catchy guitar riffs, “Girls” was already one of my favourite tracks off the album, but I somehow fell in love with it some more after watching the music video. Unlike their past videos, “Girls” was filmed in colour instead of their go-to black-and-white style. It makes sense as its’ the band’s fun take on the “anti-pop” video and the idea that they’re “not a pop band” even though they have all the pop fixings.
3. “Roar” by Katy Perry
Asides from claims that Katy Perry ripped the song off of Sara Bareilles (who didn’t mind whatsoever), “Roar” quickly became our go-to girl power anthem that we felt free to belt out in our rooms. With colourful visuals and fierce jungle animals, Katy channeled her inner Jane who had to fend for herself after her male companion is mauled by a tiger. In the end she proved that she didn’t need his help after all. How could you not feel empowered after that?
4. “Made In The USA” by Demi Lovato
After taking a break from music to work on her own personal struggles, 2013 marked Demi Lovato’s triumphant return. The music video for “Made in the U.S.A.” echoed the song’s American wholesomeness as it follows a young couple’s relationship, from their first meeting to his deployment. Plus, Canadian cutie Dustin Milligan stars in it so there’s that.
5. “Walks Like Rihanna” by The Wanted
In this homage to boy bands, The Wanted’s Jay McGuiness, Max George, Nathan Sykes, Siva Kaneswaran and Tom Parker recreated scenes from N’Sync’s “No Strings Attached,” Take That’s “Back For Good” and The Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way.” In my humble opinion, they nailed every bit of it, right down to the choreography – which we know is a huge accomplishment for these five guys.
6. “Everything Has Changed” by Taylor Swift ft. Ed Sheeran
In what might just be the most adorable music video of the year, Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran brought the “aws” for their “Everything Has Changed” video.” They managed to find a mini Ed and Taylor to showcase the adorable friendship between these two real life BFFs. I mean, how can seeing “mini Ed” reading The Notebook not leave you feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.
7. “22” by Taylor Swift
Whether you’re in your car or at karaoke night, “22” is just one of those songs you can’t help but belt out at the top of your lungs. Not only did the video make me want to party until the sun rises and be completely carefree, it left me wishing I could pull off every adorable outfit in the video just as flawlessly as Taylor. Sigh.
8. “In a World Like This” by Backstreet Boys
The Backstreet Boys’ 20th anniversary was probably one of the most exciting moments of the year – for me at least. Off their celebratory album of the same name, the music video for “In A World Like This” is a sweet sentiment to overcoming hardships with that one important person by your side. Also, to have Kevin Richardson back with Brian Littrell, Nick Carter, A.J. McLean and Howie Dorough was nothing short of magical and we BSB fans couldn’t help fanigirling a little A LOT over the reunion.
9. “Come and Get It” by Selena Gomez
Fans may have first loved her as the spunky Alex Russo on Wizards of Waverly Place, but these days Selena Gomez is all grown up and heating up the music charts. With her new mature look and sound, Selena showed off her sultry side with Bollywood-inspired moves in the “Come and Get It” music video. She basically proved that she has what it takes to move on from her Disney days with poise and class.
10. “Best Song Ever” and “Story of My Life” by One Direction
Okay so I had a bit of a tough time choosing, so I’m going to make it a draw between these two.
Not only did “Best Song Ever” go on to break VEVO’s 24 hour record, but it brought us memorable characters and moments. With a choreographed number of our favourite 1D dance fillers and featuring the band’s “alter-egos” (Marcel, Veronica, Harvey, Jonny and Leeroy), what’s not to love? I’ll never shimmy the same way again.
And just when we thought “Best Song Ever” might have been their “best video ever,” Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik got all sentimental in the video for “Story of My Life.” The guys recreated their early memories with help from their family, making us want to shed a tear (or five hundred) every time we watch.
